A PAIR of Ashbourne businessmen have decided to follow their passion in life and trade their successful plastering firm to start a tipi-hire business.
Matthew Chell and Duncan Waring have enjoyed seven years of success with their Plastering firm, Steadfast UK, but it was their passion for the outdoors that encouraged them to pursue a completely different path in life.
The pair visited the National Outdoor show at the NEC a few years back and it was here that they first laid eyes on tipis.
They spotted a gap in the market around Ashbourne and began looking into the possibilities of purchasing and importing the tipis from Sweden.
Peaktipis was formed at the end of 2011 and has become the Midlands’ leading supplier of giant kata tipis for weddings, festivals, corporate events and birthday celebrations.
Co-founder and owner Matthew said: “We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to build our new business based around our passion for the outdoors, whilst also providing something unique and special for the Midlands and surrounding areas.
“We also feel extremely privileged to play such a significant part in our clients’ special occasions, be it a Wedding or mile-stone birthday party and really enjoy creating something bespoke to each individual client, treating every event as if it was our own.”
The tents are based on the traditional tipis of the Sami people of Lapland and combine both modern and traditional techniques and materials which can withstand the British elements.
Matthew and Duncan, along with a close friend in the joinery trade from their construction days, produced and manufactured all of their own rustic furniture, consisting of Scandinavian pine slat tables and benches.
The pair also have available to hire their own fully licensed bar, dance floor, catering tent, lighting effects, soft furniture and open fires pits.
