A PRIMARY school near Ashbourne has impressed Ofsted inspectors with the quality of its after school club.
Marston Montgomery Primary School’s ‘Kids’ Clubhouse’ had been inspected in 2010 and Ofsted’s experts had graded it with only ‘satisfactory’ but, following a return visit this month, its score was upgraded to ‘good’,
The club, which is run each day by three members of staff, from 3.30pm until 6pm, looks after 34 children, is judged to have made ‘considerable progress’ since its last report.
Ofsted inspector Jennie Dalkins said: “It is now led by an enthusiastic committee and dedicated management team who are committed to raising standards.
“There is a clear vision for the future of the setting and effective monitoring and reviewing ensures that children are receiving good quality care and education.
“The setting recognises the important role parents have in their children’s learning and care and effort is made to inform them of ongoing events and planned activities.”
Mrs Dalkins has also remarked on the steps that have been taken by the club to improve over its last inspection, stating that everything that needed to be made better has now been improved.
She said: “All recommendations from the previous inspection have been addressed. For example, fire evacuation drills are now regularly carried out and written risk assessments are now in place.
“As a result, both staff and children are familiar with the procedure to ensure swift evacuation and the premises and equipment are all regularly checked to reduce any hazards to to children.
“Future aims for the setting have been identified, including the development of a new parents’ pack and additional activities based on children’s requests.
“This ensures that it continues to develop and improve outcomes for children.”
The latest grading moves the club from one mark off the bottom of the four-point scale to being one mark of the top of the four-point scale.
According to the report, to achieve an ‘outstanding’ grade at its next inspection, the club now needs to keep track of children’s progress to support their learning and to extend the opportunities for parents to contribute to self-evaluation of the setting by providing easy access to policies and procedures.
