THIEVES have broken into a container at Ashbourne’s new library construction site and stolen equipment.

Contractors working on the site, on behalf of Derbyshire County Council, reported the break in to police on Tuesday, last week.

It is thought the burglary took place between 4pm on Friday, February 1 and Tuesday, February 5 as entry was gained to the property, in Compton, which is being worked on to replace Ashbourne’s library with a £2.5 million new building.

A Stihl saw and a vibrating machine were taken from the container and police are making enquiries in the area and looking at CCTV images.

At a recent public meeting councillors said the library building, which will also house a registry office, day centre and information service along with exhibition space, should be ready by April.

Workers on the site have now fitted its roof and windows, making the building water-tight and ready for internal work to begin.

Anyone with information on the thefts is as asked to call police on 101.
