MEMBERS of Ashbourne Town Council have welcomed the addition of a memorial scroll bearing the names of all the Mercian Regiment soliders who have died in service since 2007.
The town’s Mayor, Councillor Steve Bull, was presented with the scroll by 71-year-old Enid Corker during a leg of her 200 mile sponsored walk to raise funds for the Regiment’s benevolence charity.
Mrs Corker, who has also completed a 35 day expedition to Everest Base Camp last year, completed the entire trip with no rest days by herself, although she was joined on each leg by soldiers from the regiment.
Her route started in Cheshire on Saturday, August 31 when she presented a memorial scroll and arrived in Ashbourne on Thursday, September 5 after setting off from Alton.
Ashbourne was the only Derbyshire town she visited to receive one of the four scrolls and, after leaving the town hall, she set off through Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to finish in Worcestershire.
The scroll was unveiled to councillors at their meeting last Tuesday.
