Memory Lane

INTEREST in Ashbourne Methodist School in the 1950s has been reignited by a BBC researcher looking to find out more about an archive film found just weeks ago.

Rehannah Mian launched an appeal for pupils who attended the school in 1955 to get in touch as part of a possible programme for BBC Inside Out.

Former student at the school, Joan Lane, who now lives in Rocester, contacted Ms Mian and also provided a further insight into life at the so-called “slum school.”

Mrs Lane, who is pictured in the centre of the photograph near to the cup, loaned an archive photograph to the News Telegraph of the top form choir at Ashbourne Methodist School.

The choir were Derbyshire School Choir cup winners in 1956 and are pictured with headteacher and choir master, Wilfred Warren and his assistant Mr A Hibbert.

For more information about the BBC “slum schools” report of 1955 and the appeal for information by BBC researcher, Ms Mian, please visit www.ashbournenewstelegraph.co.uk.

A clip from the documentary is also available at the News Telegraph website, or by searching Ashbourne News Telegraph in You Tube.

Anyone who can help identify members of the choir can contact the News Telegraph on 01335 300200 or call in to our offices at 6, Market Place, Ashbourne.
