A COUPLE have told of their shock after receiving an unexpected home visit from their neighbours — who crashed a car through the front of their house.

Emergency services descended on the quiet village of Wyaston after a woman crashed her car through Sue and Len Green’s front door.

Fire engines, ambulances and police arrived at the house in Pump Lane at 11.43am on Friday, after the 06- registered silver Vauxhall Astra collided with the front of the home.

Both the driver and a 69-year-old woman had to be cut free from the wreckage. The pensioner was also treated for wrist and shoulder injuries, believed to have been caused by hitting her head on the windscreen.

The car crashed more than 18in inside the front door and a structural engineer from Derbyshire Dales District Council was called out to ensure the property was made safe during the rescue operation, due to a large crack below a bedroom window.

The damaged house has been made safe and Mrs Green said she was thankful that no-one was at home when the crash happened.

Mrs Green and her husband were on their way to visit friends in Leeds when Sue’s 20 year-old daughter, Felicity Potter — who had been horse-riding at the time of the accident — rang to tell them what had happened.

Mrs Green said:”We just had to turn around and start making our way back home.

“Felicity had to deal with most of the police and firemen and everything. It seemed like it was a major incident.” While thankful that no-one was seriously injured, Mrs Green has been left upset and angry about the state of her home.

“The hall is a bit like Beirut and the wall has gone, while the ceiling is being held up by a piece of wood.

“We were going to visit friends in Leeds when Felicity rang and we had to turn back.

“The front of the house has had to be boarded up because anyone could have just walked through.

“The whole weekend has been stressful.” A police spokesman confirmed that an investigationinto the collision was underway and that both the passenger and driver had been taken to hospital, although the driver was uninjured.

Mrs Green added: “The crash has just caused devastation and mess to the front of the house. We weren’t here so we don’t know exactly what happened, but the police seemed to think it was just an accident. They said it looked as though the car just came straight through the front door.

“It is not the usual way we would receive visitors.”
