ASHBOURNE’S craziest people are getting ready to make a leap on faith on New Year’s Day.
The annual Mappleton bridge jump into the river Dove is still scheduled to go ahead despite recent rain with more forecast on the way.
The event will take place at 12pm on Wednesday, January 1, and spectators are invited to get there early to grab their prime position.
Teams of two will negotiate the river by small boat to reach the bridge, where they have to run from the river side up the bank to the bridge, before making the leap of 30 feet into the often freezing cold river, before running across the field to the finish line.
This year individuals wanting simply to experience the thrill of the jump can pay a small fee on the day and join the queue to splash down after the race is over.
So far the organisers have more than 20 boats and 10 jumpers registered.
There will be hot food available on the day, and directions through the village to help find parking spaces.
If the river becomes too high for the event to take place details will be on the News Telegraph website tomorrow morning.
