WORK has begun to create a field of allotments in a village near Ashbourne.
Following a two year search for land, villagers in Brassington have struck a deal to take on a 15 year lease on a field in West End that will accommodate 19 plots.
Already 17 plots have been snapped up and a waiting list is being formed and good weather has meant the first work has been able to take place on converting the land.
Project leaders are still on the look-out for extra funding as they look into providing mains water and fenes.
Project chairman Darren Rippon said: “I think this is a wonderfull step for a small village and am very pleased with the interest and help we have had from all the locals.”
The last allotments in Brassington were turned over to housing in the 1940s.
