A PILOT scheme is set to help villagers find out information about council tax, benefits and business rates.

People living in Staffordshire Moorlands villages such as Wetton, Calton and Alton can use a new automated telephone service to access some services provided by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, such as applying for single person benefit, between 5.15pm and 8.45am.

Customers are advised to call 0345 605 3011 for council tax and business rates and 0345 605 3012 for benefits.

Advisors will still be availble during working hours.

Councillor Tony Hall, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “This is a very busy time of year for our customer services team as residents start to get their council tax bills and we receive a higher number of calls than at other periods.

“To improve the service we can offer at this time, we’ve put together some information about the common questions we’re asked and made this available outside normal hours, along with the facility to tell us if your circumstances have changed.”
