CHILDREN at an Ashbourne primary school have chipped away the competition to win a prize for their potato growing skills.
Reception year one pupils at St Oswald’s Infant School in Mayfield Road grew the heaviest crop of spuds in the region as part of a school competition.
The kids’ crop weighed in at a hefty 5,492 grams which was enough to beat their competition and win a special children’s bench for their playground.
The competition, Grow your Own potatoes, was one of the first primary school-based growing projects and is now largest of its kind.
Schools receive a free growing kit containing everything they need to grow their crop of potatoes.
