THE number of motorcycle racing events at a rural circuit could double if controversial proposals for weekly race sessions are approved.
Darley Moor Motorcycle Road Race Club has applied for up to 34 extra practice sessions at Darley Moor Sports Centre between March and October each year, more than doubling the current 14-day annual allocation.
An emergency meeting has been held by Edlaston and Wyaston Parish Council in the wake of the application and villagers in Wyaston say they will object to any plans for more race days because of the noise from racing bikes.
Peter Rosser is a member of the parish council. He said: “The village view is that the noise from the race track is a big problem.” John Edwards’ home is just half a mile from the track. He said: “My personal opinion is that I’ve been going to motorcycle race meetings all over the country for years. I’m not trying to stop them having any practice sessions.
“What we’re asking for is a reasonable balance between reasonable requirements for Darley Moor Race Club and the requirements of Wyaston residents.” Nick Boileau is another Wyaston man who plans to object to the application. He said: “I think the local residents are pretty unanimous in thinking that the thing is just too noisy. It’s a very, very noisy activity.” The News Telegraph understands the proposals are unlikely to be debated by district council planners before February.
No-one from the Darley Moor club was available for comment at the time of going to press.
