A TEAM of rally drivers from Ashbourne have returned safe and sound after a turbulent trip to compete in this year’s Welsh Rally.
David Poyser and his co-driver John Orme were sharing stages with some of the biggest names in world rallying as they set off to compete in the national stages in their Honda Civic but unfortunately a popped drive shaft followed by gear box trouble cut their three day outing into just one successful session.
The pair, who were helped along by Steve Shenton from Shenton’s garage in Ashbourne, sponsored by Potter’s Poultry and supported by a team of friends and family, overcome their mechanical maladies on the first day of competition to finish the second day in 22nd place out of 70 cars.
However the third day saw another gearbox problem calling time on their trip despite all the hard work from their mechanics and support crew.
David, from Doveridge, and John, from Sudbury, who are both farmers in the area, hope to return to the British rally stages next year but have said they will concentrate on fixing their car and finding a stronger gear box first.
