THE unprecedented ice-cold temperatures and snowfall during the past week has been highlighted in this picture of the River Manifold.

The photograph, which was taken by Roger Cannon of Hulme End, Buxton, illustrates how the normally fast-flowing river has been transformed into a sheet of ice.
Mr Cannon said: “I took the picture when we had just had a fresh drop of snow. Normally the River Manifold is a fast flowing river. However, we have had several days of protracted subzero temperatures during the daytime here in the Manifold Valley.” Mr Cannon was shocked at the temperatures recorded in recent days. He added: “On the morning of Thursday January 7, I took the dog down towards our riverside meadow at 6.30am and the temperature was a perishing minus 21 degrees celsius.
“This is the coldest I have ever experienced in England and I am 61 years of age.”
