INCESSANT rain made way for a spectacular free fireworks display on Friday, in an annual event organised by Ashbourne Town Council.
The display, which takes place each year on Ashbourne Recreation Ground, saw hundreds of people turn out on Friday evening to see what town councillors are hailing one of their best shows yet.
A new company to the town, Cheshire-based Nemesis Fireworks, took centre stage and laid on a 27 minute display which councillors say ‘went fabulously’.
Councillor Denise Brown said: “It was absolutely fabulous, we all got our money’s worth.
“We asked for big bangs and that’s what we got, they created a first-rate display, they really were first class.
“They said how the recreation ground was ideally suited to them and how it was a fantastic setting for fireworkds.
“The funfair was also there, adding an extra bit of enjoyment for the families.
“We thought the night was going to be a bit of a washout right up until about 5pm but they say the sun shines on the righteous and we were quite pleased when the weather cleared up for us.”
Ashbourne’s Mayor Steve Bull, spoke on behalf of the Ashbourne Town Council and said: “I think events like this give something back to the residents of Ashbourne.
“It’s something safe for the children of the town and their parents and grandparents to enjoy and we also have the funfair, which alwasy goes down well.”
The fireworks night is one of three big events the town council has either organised or has been heavily involved with in the coming weeks.
On Saturday, November 16, events are planned to mark the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights and on Friday, December 6 the popular late night shopping evening will get underway.
