Shrovetide scorers ready to walk for breast cancer

Written byNATALIE WAKEFIELD

AN ANNUAL charity walk is to have a Shrovetide flavour this year, with both scorers from the game racing to get around the course first.

Up’ard scorer David Spencer and Down’ard scorer James Carter are to open the Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, May 18, before racing around Carsington Water.

Over the last four years, the annual event has raised £52,384.30, every penny of which has gone to providing kit to help beat breast cancer at Derby Hospitals.

The walk, which is organised by Clare Brennan and Josie Winbow, has become a highlight of the town’s calendar with scores of people turning out, many in fancy dress, to help provide life-saving kit, including radiotherapy equipment, for people with cancer.

Mrs Winbow said: “We are delighted to announce that this year’s event is being opened by both goal scorers of this year’s fabulous Shrovetide Football Game and both will compete to get around the course first.

“Will it be a draw again? Who will win, Upards or Downards?

“Join in the fun, wear fancy dress, design your own t-shirt and win a meal for four at the Bowling Green.

“We urge everyone, including supporters of the fabulous game, to join this year’s walk around Carsington and compete once again.

“Will there be more Up’ards or Down’ards who complete the course? And which side will complete the course first?

“Come along, get some exercise and after completing the challenge join us in celebration with a barbecue, bar, live music, pancakes and a well earned rest for all.”
