AN ASHBOURNE boat-builder has scooped fourth prize in this year’s Matlock Bath Illuminations.
Rory Harrison, 26, built his boat in a back garden in Beresford Avenue along with his family members and it was one of four entries shipped in from the town this year.
Rory’s father Michael Hall, his brother Matthew Hall and his uncle David Harrison all took boats to the illuminations - but it was Rory’s boat that caught the judges’ eyes.
His creation was themed on The Smurfs and the design - which was rowed along the Derwent on opening night by rory himself - featured a ferris wheel.
His father won the competition, which is judged by members of the public, with his Bob the Builder design but this year failed to beat Rory and his Smurf boat.
Top prize this year went to Christine Dence, Richard Wood and Pete Hartshorn with their dragon-themed boat which the randomly-selected judges chose as their favourites on the opening night, which took place on Saturday.
The parade of illuminated boats takes place from 7.45pm every Saturday and Sunday evening until 26 October and can be viewed from Derwent Gardens.
The Gardens and Lovers’ Walks are also bedecked with lights.
