EXQUISITE ceramic replicas of Ashbourne’s most coveted prize are being created to commemorate a year of Royal and sporting great events and raise funds for Shrovetide.
A limited run of 300 individuallynumbered Royal Crown Derby miniature Shrovetide balls has been commissioned, which depict the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Ashbourne’s Olympic Torch Relay.
Production of the miniatures, and their ongoing sales, is being overseen by Shrovetide players Stuart Lees and Bob Dyer, who last year masterminded the creation of a one-off ceramic ball which was raffled off as a prize to raise funds for the game.
The pair approached the committee this year announcing plans to carry out a similar fund-raising project, and members embraced the idea and gave it their full support.
Shrovetide Committee Chairman Brell Ewart said: “2012 has proved to be a most memorable year for the game.
“Both with Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and that truly unforgettable evening when the Olympic Torch came through Ashbourne to be followed by the parade of balls, are both unique events that will live long in all our memories.
“The Shrovetide Committee is therefore proud to fully support the initiative from Stuart and Bob in this limited edition of miniature Royal Crown Derby miniature balls.” The £150 balls, which are around four inches in diameter, have a raised rim base, and have an external ‘seam’ at the top with other seams all mimicking a genuine Shrovetide leather.
Each ball is hand-painted like a Shrovetide Ball and depicts the Sovereign’s Crown on the front panel with the Olympic Torch passing under the Green Man Sign on the rear panel. The side panels also bear Shrovetide details.
The miniatures, which are in production now and should be ready by mid-February, will be sold in a special box, complete with a certificate of authenticity and its individually number.
Orders can be placed at a special stall due to be set up at the bottom of Victoria Square during Ashbourne’s Late Night Shopping Celebrations on Friday, December 6 or orders can also be placed by calling Mr Lees on 07970 847758, or Mr Dyer on 07989 540279.
