DESPITE fears of damaging winds and flash flooding, Ashbourne looks to have so far escaped the worst of what had been hailed the 'storm of the century'.
Damage and disruption has been reported in the south of England with thousands of homes having lost power and trees falling across roads but the Midlands looks to have escaped the worst.
Latest forecasts suggest the Midlands will see high winds, but warnings have been down-graded from the 90mph gusts that had been forecast over the weekend and it is now expected that gusts might not reach 40mph.
Experts say there could still be a risk of disruption as the storm passes and public transport services are being affected as operators take precautions.
