Thumbs-up to village recreation facility

VILLAGERS in Brassington are about to realise a 15-year-old dream after planners gave the green light to their proposal for a community recreation facility.

Brassington Parish Council members say they are thrilled at last week’s decision by the Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Southern Area Planning Committee to allow the build to go ahead.

The facility, which will give the village a floodlit sports field and pavilion building, has been asked for by villagers around 15 years ago and Brassington Parish Council has worked tirelessly to fulfil this request.

Eventually, a suitable field was purchased and the parish council worked together with the advisory working group, formed from local residents and members of all societies in the Parish, to put together suitable plans.

Extensive consultation including house to house surveys, open days and a parish plan all endorsed the need for football pitch, tennis court and multi-use games area for training and children’s games pavilion.

The new facility, when built, will cater for carpet bowls, table tennis and various other activities allowing the facility to provide opportunities for all age groups to get involved with sports in Brassington.

Pat Horrocks, chairman of Brassington Parish Council said: ‘We are delighted with this news, this facility belongs to the residents of Brassington Parish, it is what they asked for and hopefully in the not too far distant future they will be enjoying it.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have worked so hard and supported us to enable us to reach this stage.

“Brassington Parish Council has also worked closely with Groundwork Derbyshire who have guided us through to the culmination of our plans and local architects, Anthony Short and Partners produced a great plan.

“Now the work begins, applying for grants and funding to develop the site and open the recreation field, the AWG will form a management committee to take the project forward with support from the Parish Council.”
