ASHBOURNE’S hope for a revived tourist information centre could still come to fruition after town councillors discussed opening up a facility in the town hall.

Town and District Councillor
Steve Bull told members at a recent meeting of Ashbourne Town Council that Derbyshire Dales District Council was due to discuss the prospect of opening a tourist information centre in the town hall at a meeting on Monday, February 28.

District councillors wanted the town council to answer questions ahead of the meeting including opening times, funding and staffing.

It is proposed, by Ashbourne Town Council, that two part time members of staff will open the centre in accordance with district council guidance and £10,000 has been set aside to fund the staffing costs.

It has also been suggested that a Visitor Information Point pod could be installed while alteration works took place as planning constraints on the listed former market hall could lead to a lengthy project.

Derbyshire Dales District Council is due to close many of its tourist information centres, including the one in Ashbourne’s Market Place this year as a response to changing habits of visitors, which, they have found, largely use the internet.
