ASHBOURNE is to have a new curate.
Taking up his post in the parish later this month will be Mike Doyle, who will be one of a number of candidates ordained deacon at Derby Cathedral on Sunday June 29.
Mr Doyle, who is 44, will complete his training to become a priest under the guidance of the vicar, the Rev Geraldine Pond.
He is the third curate for the parish in recent years, following in the footsteps of the Rev Dominic Stone, who went on to take charge at Marchington, and the Rev Dr Jo White, who is now Rector at Wingerworth, near Chesterfield.
Mr Doyle and his wife, Sarah, have two sons, Michael and Benedict (pictured).
Writing in the June issue of the Ashbourne with Mappleton Parish News, Mr Doyle gives the exact date when he became a Christian: Sunday January 7, 2001.
He explains: "I had gone to my parish church looking for I know not what and on that first Sunday I felt God's call to the ordained ministry and have been following this course ever since. Prior to starting training I had worked in the insurance industry since leaving college aged 17."
Mr Doyle started St John's College, Bramcote, in September 2006, studying for the Diploma in Theology and Ministry. This is the same college which the vicar attended.
His wife Sarah trained as an archaeologist but has recently embarked on a career as a singing teacher which she hopes to continue in Ashbourne.
