Derby County looks set to sign up Real Madrid midfielder Omar Mascarell today.
Talks over a season-long loan for the 21-year-old have gone well, the News Telegraph understands.
The player was shown around the iPro Stadium last night by Chris Evans, the Rams’ head of football operations.
Mascarell plays in the holding role in midfield, a controller in front of the back four, and has a good range of passing.
Derby have been looking at the position following the body blow of losing George Thorne, their big signing of the summer, who has been sidelined for up to nine months with a serious knee injury.
Mascarell is a player for the first-team squad and will be pushing to fill the “George Thorne” role.
He has been playing for Real Madrid Castilla – Madrid’s B team – for whom he has made a total of 76 league appearances and scored eight goals.
His La Liga debut for Real Madrid came in June last year, when he replaced German star Mesut Özil late on in a 4–2 home victory over Osasuna.
He travelled with Madrid on their recent tour of the United States, where he played against Inter Milan and Roma.
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, his career started at Santa Cruz and he also played for Tegueste and Laguna before he joined Real Madrid’s youth system at 17.
He has represented Spain at youth level.
