AS airport check-ins get stricter about luggage weight, the more important it is to think about the amount you take away on holiday with you.
These days there can often be quite a hefty charge for check-in baggage so savvy holidaymakers and now travelling abroad with hand luggage only to keep the cost of the flight to a minimum.
If you are travelling with hand luggage only, not only will you be restricted to the size of case you can carry, you will also be limited to the amount of liquid which can be carried.
At the time of going to press, and checking on the individual airlines’ websites, here’s a quick guide to hand luggage sizes:
EasyJet: 56 x 45 x 25cm including wheels. www.easyjet.com
British Airways: 56 x 45 x 25cm including the handle, pockets and wheels to a maximum of 23kg. www.britishairways.com
Ryanair: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm to a maximum of 10kg. www.ryanair.com
Some airlines insist that you only take one piece of hand luggage which will include laptop bags and handbags. A charge may be incurred if you have too many pieces.
If you want to be 100 per cent sure of what you can take on board with you, either as hand or check-in luggage, check the website of the airline you are travelling with.
Individual hand luggage toiletries are limited to a maximum of 100ml and must be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag which holds no more than one litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm, so it’s important to plan ahead.
Contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed and the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top. Each passenger can carry only one of these bags and the bag must be presented for examination at the airport security point.
Containers larger than 100ml (excluding essential medicines) will not be allowed through the security point even if they are only part full. Liquids include all drinks including water, soup and syrups; cosmetics and toiletries including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lipsticks; sprays including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants; pastes including toothpaste; gels including hair and shower gel; contact lens solution, and any other solutions and items of similar consistency.
There’s no limit to the amount of toiletries you can pack in suitcases stored in the plane’s hold, but you will have to adhere to the tour operator or airlines’ baggage restrictions which will be posted on their websites.
Although we may like to stick with our favourite toiletries brand this is sometimes simply not possible with many manufacturers still not selling travel-size toiletries.
It is worth thinking about taking packs of wipes such as eye make-up removal, facial cleansing, hand and deodorising wipes, as these don’t appear have any hand luggage restrictions.
So for all you holiday honeys, here is my guide to a travel-tastic summer.
