A POLICE operation has been running to stamp out crime in shopping areas across the Derbyshire Dales.

Operation Claud has seen Safer Neighbourhood Teams increasing patrols in shopping areas in the run-up to Christmas and plain-clothes officers have been out on the streets.

Police officers have also been meeting up with retailers help them deal with criminal behaviour if they spot it.

Sergeant Denis Murphy said: “Our priority is to make sure our town shopping areas are safe to visit and we enjoy a great partnership with retailers and local authorities that helps us achieve that.

“Christmas can be a stressful time on the High Street and the last thing anyone wants is to find they’ve become the victim of crime, so the purse chain campaign is a great way for them to protect themselves.

“We also want to protect our traders and with a positive relationship with the shops, we are able to act swiftly to prevent any loss to them in this busy period, as was demonstrated in that early incident.

“The Derbyshire Dales is a very safe place to live, work and visit and with campaigns such as this, we are able to make sure it stays that way.”

Officers have also been handing out free purse chains.
