Lastolite ePhotomaker Kit

Priced £65, for stockists visit

WHEN you think of compulsive eBay buyers and sellers you don’t instantly link them to studio photography — but you soon will.

Successful selling on eBay is very reliant on how you market your product. The better the photograph, the more professional your posting will appear and the more chance you have of attracting buyers and higher bidders.

Professional retailers enlist the help of photographic studios to ensure their images are sharp, adequately illuminated and free from clutter in the background but eBay users can’t call on these services.

But what they can do is invest in the professional-quality desktop studio tent from Lastolite.

Lastolite is a highly respected and sought-after brand in the world of professional photographers.

Their products are well-designed, made to last and offer impeccable results every time.

The same can be said for this ePhotomaker Kit — a professional-quality studio tent designed with the eBay user in mind.

The tent allows you to take close-up macro shots of your products — often without the need for camera flash — and without background distraction.

The ePhotomaker Kit is available in two colours — a white interior as shown in the photograph or with a black interior as we tested.

The tent arrives neatly wrapped in a zipped bag which is no bigger than a discus.

Sharing the same quick pop-up action as modern camping tents, this studio unit quickly springs into shape.

Extra rigidity is added to the base of the tent with a spring-loaded support held in place with Velcro strips.

Rather than using your camera flash to illuminate your subject, this tent relies on a strong external light source.

A desktop lamp is adequate — just make sure you use a high-wattage traditional bulb. During our review we started with a desktop lamp using a low-energy bulb but struggled to get the required illumination until switching to a high-wattage filament spotlight.

A gel screen and clamps are included to prevent the ‘fake’ yellowness of the bulb distorting the colour of your subject.

With the light (complete with gel screen) shining through one side of the tent, the interior is richly illuminated without shadows thanks to the reflective panel on one of the internal tent sides.

A mini tripod is included with the kit so that you can mount your camera and use it without the need for flash even at slow shutter speeds.

For those of you really keen on perfection, the package also includes a grey card so that you can guarantee consistent exposure and white balance between shoots — especially when used alongside a light meter.

Once you have finished your eBay studio session, the tent simply folds away into its case along with the tripod and foldable grey card.

Within about an hour, you can be up and running and shooting professional-quality product shots

A little trial and error is needed in the first instance when it comes to positioning of the light source, but once this is sorted and tested with the grey card, you can guarantee consistent results time after time.

The black interior of our tent worked well, but I’d recommend the white innards for the novice as this reflects easier than the black.

Overall, this kit is worth every penny. Superb.
