A PAIR of racers from the Ashbourne area have secured sponsorship for the 2013 BTRDA Rally Championship season.

Doveridge’s David Poyser, 41, and co-driver John Orme, of Sudbury, are both farmers and dragooned the help of Potters Poultry last season after a broken gearbox threatened to derail their season, and the company have now agreed to back the team this year.

Poyser and Orme finished third in their class in last season’s championship, a feat made all the more remarkable given that Poyser lost the lower part of his right leg in a accident involving a sugerbeat harvester 22 years ago.

The duo, along with mechanic Andy Hudson, have competed in a lot of rallies over the years using Honda, Peugeot and Subaru cars. while their latest vehicle, a front-wheel drive Honda Civic, was built by Poyser himself.

He said: “With it being such a new car we have had a far share of problems with the gear box and driveshafts, but hopefully we have overcome them now and we can concentrate on winning some trophies.

“This is only possible for us with the kindness of Potters Poultry sponsoring us, as farming is not paying these days like it should.”
