CLIFTON'S hopes of making ground on the early pacesetters in Derbyshire County League Division One were thwarted by the weather on Saturday.

They were able to fit in only 20 overs against second-placed Elvaston at Chapel Lane, reaching 49-2, losing captain Matt Wilson and James Barnes cheaply.

Will Wilson and Faisal Khan were looking comfortable when the rain finally forced the players off for the last time.

Clifton make the long trip to Eckington, near Sheffield, for their next match on Saturday.

Ashbourne's first team were at home to Elvaston thirds in Division 7S but there was never a chance of a start.

Ashbourne's seconds were on the wrong end of a losing draw away to Elvaston fourths.

Although Vinnie Pegg took three wickets, two of which he caught himself, Elvaston posted a challenging 226-6 in their 46 overs.

Ashbourne did not help themselves by dropping six catches.

When they batted, it was slow going and Elvaston chipped away at the batting order, only Pegg, with 24, making double figures. But Elvaston could not get them all out and Jake Hulme and John Ford hung on at 81-9.

On Saturday, Ashbourne first are at Draycott & Hanbury, while the seconds are at home to Abbots Bromley.
