SHROVETIDE moments captured on film are to be shown publicly at a special event this month.

A Shrovetide Film Evening is at The Empire Club on Friday, January 25 at 7.30pm and will feature a newly created montage of short clips from the Media Archive of Central England.

Footage includes scenes recorded by Pathe News and ITV and will show the game and how it has changed from 1921 to 1988.

The evening will also include anecdotes from older players of the game.

Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football players committee have organised the event with the help of historian and supporter of the game, Trilby Shaw.

Mrs Shaw said: “I thought there must be somewhere in the Midlands that could help us do something like this.

“I got in touch with MACE and they said that they did hold these kinds of showings and they sent me a list of what they had.

“I selected film footage from 1921 to 1988 and they were very nice about it because they put it all on one disc which shows how the game has changed.”

Clips include news and features on Shrovetide and some familiar faces, both celebrities and Ashburnians can be spotted on the film.

Mrs Shaw added: “You can see how it has changed because we don’t get the water play that we used to since they culverted the river.

“It is really interesting to see how the game has altered and I think the youngsters should know more of the history of the game. We are looking forward to it and I hope we get a lot of people come to it because we’re hoping to make a big thing of it,”

Funds from the film evening will go to the Shrovetide game, as will monies raised from a Shrovetide quiz sheet which has been available at businesses in the town centre since November. The deadline for quiz entries is Friday, January 18 and the sheets must be returned to the Ashbourne News Telegraph offices by then for people to be in with a chance of winning two tickets to the Shrovetide Luncheon.

Mrs Shaw is also appealing for any Shrovetide balls, memorabilia or ephemera which can be lent for an exhibition sponsored by Ashbourne Town Council on Friday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 13 at the Town Hall with demonstrations of making and painting Shrovetide balls.
