A 60FT chestnut tree has destroyed a garage and damaged a car when it fell during a 60mph storm last night.

Ashbourne has escaped the worse of the latest winter storms, which reached 108mph and is one of the worst to have hit the country in decades.

Mark and Diane Grist ran out to assess the damage to their home in Derby Road last night at around 7.30pm when the tree was uprooted from its base in The Firs estate and crushed their garage.

Parts of the tree also landed on their Mini, which was parked near to the garage, smashing its windscreen and denting several panels, and the branches missed their two-storey house, with just a few tips brushing their back wall.
