STAFF, volunteers and visitors have enjoyed the first open day of the new year at an Ashbourne animal rescue and rehoming centre.
Ashbourne and District Animal Welfare Society, which last year celebrated its 25th birthday and took in its 1,000th dog, holds regular open days to showcase the work it carries out in rescuing and rehoming cats and dogs.
Its centre in Wyaston Road, which is dubbed ‘The Ark’, takes centre stage as sales of bric-a-brac are set up while guests are invited to tour the kennels and cattery.
Open days are held each month and are a good chance to visit the centre, which is open by appointment only at other times of the year.
As the centre is self-funded, it relies on events and open days and a busy calendar of themed events is laid on each year.
The next event to take place at The Ark will be the Be My Valentine open day on Sunday, February 9 from 11am until 4pm and this will be followed by a March Madness open day during the same times on Sunday, March 16.
