SANTA will once again be travelling the streets of Ashbourne this year, thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers.
The annual Santa Sleigh was taken on by a group of mums last year, after the town’s Round Table group were unable to continue the tradition due to a lack of volunteers.
A group of mums who got together on Facebook took over the running of the Santa Sleigh with help from Ashbourne Town Council and businesses in the town.
Mum of two, Jo Shenton, with friends Jane Etherington and Jo Clewes, took on the event and last year raised £2,000 for Ashbourne mayor’s charities and Ashbourne Ladies Football Club.
Mrs Shenton has once again teamed up with Mrs Clewes and the pair will again be collecting donations for the charitable fund of Ashbourne Mayor, Councillor Steve Bull and Ashbourne Ladies FC.
Mrs Shenton said: “After taking over the Santa Float last year and being absolutely overwhelmed with the support from the fantastic people of Ashbourne we are very excited to be out again this year and for many years to come.
“We have been so grateful for the support of Ashbourne Town Council as well as businesses in the town including Alan Brown Surfacing Ltd, Raptor Graphix, PJ Autos, Bphysical, Kay & Co, Sainsbury’s, Master Mover, Homebase, GT News and Bargain Booze.” The Santa Sleigh will be out in the town each night except Thursday between Sunday, December 16 and Friday, December 21.
The sleigh will cover the majority of Ashbourne and Clifton in sections each night from 6pm.
Ashbourne Mayor, Councillor Steve Bull, said: “After last year’s disappointing news that the Santa Sleigh was going to finish, seeing the ladies take it on and keep it going is fantastic.
“Sue and I went out with Alan and Angela Hodkinson to help out and seeing the children’s faces with the sleigh and the Christmas music is a credit to the town.
“And all credit must go to the ladies who have kept it going.
“I shall be out helping. It is wonderful the town, the children and the whole community.
“It’s absolutely brilliant and the town council are only too pleased to help them with it and contribute.” The Santa Sleigh is also primed to lead As
