SHROVETIDE turner-up and Ashbourne businessman Nigel Brown has given his ball-throwing skills a practice run at an Ashbourne school by officially starting a playground Shrovetide game.
Mr Brown was one of the guests of honour at St Oswald’s Infant School as it followed its five-year tradition of holding a Shrovetide-themed day of events.
The children’s day began with principal ball painter Tim Baker and player Darren Waring talking to them about Shrovetide.
Tim and Darren brought in Shrovetide balls and children designed and decorated their own Shrovetide balls in the classrooms.
The lessons were followed with a Shrovetide luncheon with Mr Brown, Mr Baker, Mr Waring, former chairman Mr Tomlinson and his wife, and Mayor Steve Bull.
After Mr Brown turned up the ball on the playground the children played football, and during the afternoon they learnt about the history of shrovetide.
