AN ASHBOURNE painter has described how honoured she felt to see her artwork on a Shrovetide ball for the first time.
Jane Etherington has been a ceramic artist at Royal Crown Derby for 24 years and was asked to repaint the ball scored by Paul Harrison at 8.57pm during the Ash Wednesday game in 2000.
Mrs Etherington was surprised and delighted to see the ball displayed in a specially made cabinet in the window of the Ashbourne News Telegraph last week.
Mr Harrison made the cabinet himself, incorporating a mirrored base, lights and a revolving disco ball motor to allow the complete artwork to be seen.
He said: “I’m extremely pleased with the artwork Jane has done. She’s done a really good job.
“That ball stopped the Up’ards from equalling the Down’ard record of having most continuous balls.
“I was happy to display it in the News Telegraph window because I wanted to thank Jane for doing such a good job.”
Mrs Etherington said: “I feel honoured to have been asked to do it because being a born and bred Ashburnian, I’ve always followed Shrovetide. I love it, it’s in my blood.”
