Skaters storm to success

ASHBOURNE Speed Skating Club put in a magnificent performance at the National Indoor Championships at Maldon in Essex, bringing home a bagful of medals.

Mini Boys member Finnbarr Brooks claimed two gold medals in the 100m and 200m events and followed up by taking silver in the longer 500m race in which he finished behind club-mate Toby Wymer.

Wymer also took bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m, while Alex Blake claimed third place in the 200m final, making it an all Ashbourne podium.

Pupil Boy Joe Matkin took another bronze in the 300m final, while Millie Ainsworth was runner-up in a very competitive Cadet Girls 100m final.

Her team-mate Ellie Wymer was third in 500m final.

Millie and Ellie were also in action in the 1000m, taking silver and bronze respectively.

In the veteran ladies' 100m and 500m finals, Helen Bannister and Angela Wymer grabbed gold and silver, the positions being reversed in the 1500m.

Coach Ben Gaskin was a silver medallist in the veteran men's 100m and also bagged bronze in the 1500m.

The Ashbourne team line-up was: Jed B, Izzy Matkin, Lola Blake, Lauren Gaskin, Alex Blake, Laurie Peck, Sophie Hollick, Zizi Peck, Claudia Stocks, Joe Matkin, James Ashworth, Millie Ainsworth, Ellie Wymer, Olivia Stocks, Danny Lee, Lewis Jack, Lloyd Storm, Logan McQuirk, Dougie Illingworth, Harvey Binns, Ben Gaskin, Alex Wymer, Helen Bannister, Amanda Matkin and Jayne Thornhill.

Alice Stocks, Dave B, Asher B and Sam Gaskin competed in the Rat Racers category for beginners.

The club's skating will be competing in the British Outdoor Championships at Tatum Park, London in July.
