I READ the views of Barry Pearson on the EU in this week’s Coffee Break with interest, but cannot let them pass unchallenged.
Absorbs money like a sponge? It costs about the same to run the bureaucracy in Brussels as it does to run Hampshire County Council. Not such bad value then, considering the amount of money they handle and the various countries that they have to deal with.
As to the accounts not being signed off for 19 years, that is correct, but the blame cannot be put on Brussels, whose headquarters accounts pose no problem.
The reason that the accounts are not signed off is because National governments, including Britain’s, whether run by Conservatives or Labour, have refused to open their own books to the EU Auditors so that those auditors can verify that the money disbursed by the EU to the various National governments has been properly spend on the matters for which the money is issued.
So it is time to raise objection with our governments, who should be setting a better example, than blame the EU itself.
