Aztecs hit stars for six

A GOOD team performance by Ashbourne Aztecs U11s saw them beat Mickleover All Stars on a very soggy pitch which got heavier as the game went on.

The home side weathered some early pressure and managed to successfully defend three corners in the first quarter.

They then got a breakaway goal when Scott sprinted away from his full back and fired in a superb low shot in the bottom corner.

A second goal followed soon after when a cross-shot by Scott was bundled over the line by a determined Major.

A few minutes later, the centreforward got his second with a great strike after good work by McDonald- Lowe.

Sherryʼs goal was rarely threatened but he made two solid saves and kicked well.

Bailey and Pepper were now getting further forward to support the midfield of Scott, Griffiths, Challinor and Whittaker-Birks, who all created some good chances for the strikers.

After Major had gone close again, Scott hit the post after a goalmouth scramble but made amends before halftime with his second confident finish.

The central midfield partnership of Dutton and Whittaker-Birks began to control the game in the second half and made chances for Winbow and Challinor, but they couldnʼt find enough power to breach the All Stars resolute defence.

In a rare outfield appearance, Billy Owens did well on the right flank and was unlucky with two shots and a penalty shout.

Mickleover then had a good spell of possession on the left but they rarely troubled the Aztecs defence, with Lee and Wildgoose having excellent games whilst Pepper and Bailey both tackled particularly well in the wide areas.

After further good counter-attacking by McDonald-Lowe and Griffiths, Whittaker-Birks then set Dutton free through the middle but the opposition goalkeeper managed to tip his shot round the post.

Finally, Major managed to beat the offside trap and unselfishly passed to Charles Owens, who scored with a crisp finish.

After more good work by the wide players, Whittaker-Birks made it six with a strong looping shot, completing another hard earned victory for Aztecs.

AZTECS: Sherry, Pepper, Bailey, Lee, Wildgoose, Challinor, Whittaker-Birks, Griffiths, Scott, Major, McDonald-Lowe, C.Owens, Winbow, Dutton, B Owens.
