ASHBOURNE Aztecs Under-12s ended the year with an emphatic win against Mickleover 95, with Joe Reed leading the way with four goals.
After last week’s cup win, it was a chance to get three league points and Aztecs took it.
From a great Ben Wainwright corner, Tim Lueer volleyed home, before Reed scored his first to put Aztecs two up.
However a good challenge from Luis Zambrano was somehow deemed to be a penalty which, despite a brilliant effort by goalkeeper Lee Cranstone, went in.
This lifted Mickleover, who to be fair played some good football, but that only brought out the best in Aztecs full backs Liam Warner and Jack Bill.
Warner was playing at the top of his game with some really fierce tackles and Bill cleared everything that came his way – even the corner flag got a kicking!
Two more goals followed, by Kye Gordon and Reed, to put Aztecs 4-1 up.
Mickleover scored again to reduce the deficit but this inspired Ashbourne to their best 20 minutes of the season.
There was some great forward play from Adam Wildgoose, Jamie Graham, Jake Ridley and Ben Wainwright, playing one touch football with which Mickleover simply could not live.
And despite another Mickleover goal, Aztecs added three more from Zambrano and Reed, taking his total to four.
This result leaves Aztecs with seven wins out of eight matches, and a cup quarter final to look forward to after Christmas.
This talented team have only lost one league game in one and a half years, which is a fantastic achievement.
