Panthers pounce for win

Written byDAVID BROOME

MAYFIELD PANTHERS U11 3, NEWHALL RAMS U11 2

AFTER another lengthy interruption to their season, Mayfield Panthers under-11s got straight back in the groove as they completed a double over Newhall Rams to take them joint top of BJFL Division One.

The early stages saw Panthers bossing the midfield and snapping up every loose ball to launch a series of attacks.

They went ahead when Matt Moody began a good move in midfield which swept upfield to be rounded off with a goal from Harry Breeze.

Newhall responded by exerting some pressure of their own, giving Mayfield some defensive work to do.

Panthers turned the tide their way again by playing the ball from deep into the path of Breeze, who ran on to net his second goal.

They looked good value for their 2-0 half-time lead, having kept a neat shape throughout.

The second half began in similair vein, and more interpassing opened up a gap for winger Jack Edge to fire a cross shot into the far corner to increase Mayfield’s lead.

Newhall looked a well beaten team at this stage, and Panthers appeared to be coasting to a comfortable victory.

However, complacency disappeared when Newhall upped their game by scoring twice in as many minutes, the second from a free kick which crept through the wall with goalkeeper Oliver Greatrex possibly unsighted.

Mayfield now needed all their defensive discipline and battling qualaties to hang on to their narrow lead and see out the game to claim the three points, which they did.
