Ashbourne Tennis Club under-9s Division Two team picked up two wins from three matches in a round robin tournament at David Lloyd Leisure Club in Derby against the hosts’ second team, Duffield and Chesterfield seconds.
The team was Sam Playdon, Alec Barnden, Jonny Daniel and Charlie Kennedy – who stepped in at the last minute to replace the ill Sam Butler.
The first match was against league leaders Chesterfield, and although Kennedy won his first ever external match 10-8 and Playdon and Barnden won their doubles 10-4, the team lost 4-2.
Next up were David Lloyd and Ashbourne, having adapted to the carpet surface, won 4-2.
Butler, Barnden and Daniel won their singles matches and Playdon and Barnden had a fine 10-3 doubles win.
The final match was against Duffield and this produced the closest scores of the day.
Playdon beat his old adversary Archie Harrison 10-9 in a sudden death finish.
Kennedy also won 10-9, whilst both doubles pairs won 10-7 and 10-8 respectively to ensure a 4-2 victory.
This was a fine team performance, much enjoyed by players and spectators alike.
