THE Burkhill Cup, played for last Saturday, saw the course record by an amateur broken by Marchington’s Craig Young.
The Ashbourne Golf Club course yardage was re-measured by the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs in early spring, with its length off the white tees set at 6306 yards.Young, who has Just returned from a recent hand injury, stepped up to the plate and recorded the new course record.
Playing off a plus one handicap, he fired a gross 65, a six-under score in a card which was littered with birdies.
On the front nine, holes four, five and seven were birdie holes, in which a gross 33 was recorded, while the back nine saw birdies at holes 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18, coming home in 32 shots.
Brown said: “I’m delighted with that round and it could have been even better, but to return after injury and shoot that score is great, especially as I now know its the course record and I’m very proud to be the holder of the that.” Brown’s handicap is now plus two and he will have his name etched onto the winners board of the 2010 Burkhill Cup.
Division One winner was Tom Donnelly, who continued his fine form of recent weeks with a gross 75 nett 66 off his nine handicap, with Sean Fernihough and Graham Sinclair next in on nett 67s.
Peter Sutton was the winner of Division Two, shooting a nett 68 off his 13 handicap, with Simon Knight and Phil Jessup taking the runner up spots.
Dave Peregrine is enjoying a fine season and his nett 66 off his 23 handicap in Division Three was good enough for him to win the honours in the division and saw his handicap fall to 21.
Brian Hayer (nett 69) and Pete Wood (nett 71) were next in.

ASHBOURNE duo Simon Griffiths and Criag Brown won the Dove Valley Trophy at Ashbourne Golf Club last week, played off the white tees in a pairs format off a 3/4 handicap allowance.
Local lads Griffiths (hcp 1) and Brown (hcp 11) were crowned the winners of the competition on a countback with a stableford points score of 47.
The pair scored 22 points on the front nine, but the back nine holes had an incredible tale about them.
The last five holes were all gross birdies for the lads, with Brown starting it off on holes 14 and 15, and then Griffiths following suit by doing the same on holes 16, 17 and 18 to record 25 on the back nine.
Griffiths said: “It was fairytale golf on the back five holes, where both of us could do no wrong.
“To be brutally honest myself and Craig smashed it coming home and we thought we would be up there with that points tally, its a cracking win.” Runners up, narrowly missing out on a countback, were Iain McGachie and Jonathan Jessup, while two other pairs tied on 46 points were Martyn Ellis and Nathen Lee, who saw off Graham Harbey and Alex White on a countback.
