ASHBOURNE’S tourist information centre closes its doors in the Market Place for the final time today, to be replaced in the New Year by purpose-built accommodation in the nearby Town Hall.

The new Visitor Information Centre, a partnership with Ashbourne Town Council, will open in time for the schools’ half term break on Saturday, February 15.

In the meantime visitors can use a self-service information point at the town hall.

Two years ago the District Council announced improvement plans to save £110,000 by working with local businesses and organisations to provide visitor information points at popular locations throughout the Dales in place of the council’s walk-in centres.

A District Council spokesperson said: “We appreciate the continuing need for a physical presence at strategic points throughout the Dales, which is why we are going down the partnership route.

“What we also acknowledge however is that many visitors planning a trip to the Dales now have a wealth of online information to consult before setting out, and it is our intention to further improve this information too.”
