A WALKER has been treated for a serious head injury after falling into the river Dove yesterday.
West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Pickering Cave in Dovedale, Ashbourne shortly before 4.25pm on Tuesday.
An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic area support officer and a community first responder were dispatched to the scene.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Ambulance crews were called to reports of a walker who had become injured after falling in to the river.
The man, who was believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident, was treated for a serious head injury and facial injuries after he had reportedly fallen in to the river, injuring himself on some rocks.
“He was immobilised at the scene and with the assistance of park rangers was conveyed to an awaiting ambulance.
“The patient, believed to be in his 60;s was taken to University Hospital of North Staffordshire for further assessment and treatment. Medics at the hospital had been pre-alerted and were on standby awaiting his arrival.
“Given the nature of the incident the man was fortunate to have not sustained more serious or even fatal injuries.”
