THE Metro report that Liverpool are closing in on a £6 million deal for Derby County midfielder Will Hughes after sending chief scout Dave Fellows to assess him in action for England under-21s.

However, the Rams say there has been no bid for the talented teenager (pictured).

There could be light at the end of the tunnel for Real Madrid in their long-running pursuit of Gareth Bale, with Metro reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are poised to accept an offer of £93m plus Fabio Coentrao.

Chelsea will be hoping for third time lucky as they prepare to table a £28m bid for Wayne Rooney, say the Daily Express, who also say that Manchester United have turned their attentions to Southampton's left-back Luke Shaw after being rebuffed in their pursuit of Everton's Leighton Baines.

However, the Mirror claim that United will return with an improved £35m joint bid for Marouane Fellaini and Baines.

Arsenal are set to battle Monaco and Juventus for Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, while Newcastle United and Spurs will lock horns over Blackpool's Tom Ince.

Gareth Barry's wages are proving to be a stumbling block in Everton's bid to sign the Manchester City midfielder on loan.

Southampton could sign Scott Sinclair on a permanent £5m deal from Manchester City, who are keen to sell the 24-year-old winger rather than allow him to join West Brom on loan.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes is attempting to sign Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe with the 30-year-old potentially moving to the Britannia Stadium on an initial loan deal.
