TRIBUTES have been paid to the much-treasured actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who rose to prominence playing a death row inmate in acclaimed film The Green Mile, after he died at the age of 54.

Duncan suffered a heart attack in July and died at a hospital in Los Angeles after failing to recover.

He was nominated for an Oscar in 2000 for his portrayal as convicted murderer John Coffey alongside Tom Hanks in The Green Mile.

A former bodyguard, the 6ft 4in Duncan was an imposing figure who played a wide variety of action roles and also voiced animated parts.

His versatility saw him team up with Bruce Willis to save the earth in Armageddon, then play it for laughs in Will Ferrell's racing comedy Talladega Nights.

IN one of the surprise casting moves of the month Jim Carrey has signed up to play the role of The Colonel in the Jeff Wadlow-directed sequel Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall.

Carrey will play the character who helps galvanize the team of misfit super heroes assembled to fight evil.

The sequel brings back Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicolas Cage.

Carrey is a big fan of Matthew Vaughn and his original Kick Ass film which became a big cult hit in 2010. In fact in an American TV stunt he wore the Kick Ass costume for a musical duet with talk show host Conan O’Brien.

FANS of Playstation favourite Metal Gear Solid have reason to celebrate as super producer Avi Arad announced positive news about Solid Snake's possible big screen appearance.

Speaking at Metal Gear's 25th anniversary party in Tokyo recently, series creator Hideo Kojima revealed that not only is the film version back in the works, but the man behind the Spider-Man movie franchise(s), Arad himself, will be producing.

Previous attempts at taking the stealth-based action game have crashed and burned – Mike De Luca was the last to give it a try back in 2008, but that was given the kibosh in early 2010.

THE summer's two superhero blockbusters continue to storm the global box office, with The Dark Knight Rises passing the $1bn mark and The Avengers reaching a staggering $1.5 billion.

The Avengers has now climbed to $619.5m in the US domestically, which puts it third in the all time charts, behind Titanic on $658.6m and Avatar on $760.5 million.

The Dark Knight Rises has a little way to go to catch up, sitting currently down in ninth on $431.1m.

The same two films sit above The Avengers in the all-time worldwide chart, with Titanic on $2.1bn and Avatar on a jaw-dropping $2.7bn.
