AN OLIVIER- award winning comedy comes to Buxton as part of a national tour this month.
The Rise and Fall of Little Voice features a host of songs from some of the world’s greatest divas, including Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland.
Written and directed by Jim Cartwright, the show is a story of music and romance.
Shy Little Voice spends most of her time hidden away with her late father’s record collection, perfecting her astonishing impersonations.
Her extraordinary talent remains a secret until she is overheard by local talent scout, Ray Say, played by Simon Thorp.
With a determination to hit the big time, Ray builds a show around an unwilling Little Voice, who is persuaded to perform by her dismissive and over-bearing mother, Mari, played by Coronation Street star, Beverley Callard.
But as Mari and Ray push LV to her limits, the shy performer rebels, retreating into her own private world and reaching out to Billy (Ray Quinn), the meek telephone installer who understands her nature and accepts her for who she is.
Rising star Jess Robinson takes on the demanding role of Little Voice. She said: “This has always been my dream role. For me it encompasses everything that I can do.
“I’m playing someone that is so shy and reserved, and so opposite from who I am naturally, and I’m using my skills doing accents, I get to do my impressions, I get to sing in my own voice as well.”
The show stops off at Buxton Opera House with nightly performances from Monday, March 25 until Saturday, March 30 at 7.30pm.
Two matinee performances of the show are also planned for Thursday, March 28 and Saturday at 2.30pm.
