LEAGUE champions Ashbourne Aztecs Under-18s returned to action after a seven-week break with a comfortable win over Whittington.
The youth teamers have a 100 per cent record this season, and are also into the semi-final of the League Cup, but their hosts made it difficult with some resolute defending.
It took Aztecs 35 minutes to score their first as, following a superb pass from Kristian Brightmore to top scorer Jake Smith, he coolly slotted home.
The hosts declared their intentions to make a game of it when they tested Charlie Mansfield in goal on three occasions and struck the underside of the bar.
Moments later Brightmore was brought down after Scott Sears had put him through on goal and Brightmore despatched the resultant penalty to make it 2-0 at half-time.
The second half saw Aztecs take control of the game with the defence of Jordan Walton- Gibson, Matt Slater, Harrison Avery, Harry Hellaby and Charlie Mansfield putting in an excellent performance to keep a clean sheet and support the attack.
Josh Dales, Hayden Millward and Josh Sears marshalled the midfield with some incisive passing, which released the bearded James Ingram to hammer in the third.
Will Tomkinson battled gamely up front, pressing the defenders into mistakes, while Mitch Coxon provided penetration on the left before he had to withdraw through injury.
Ten minutes from the end, Avery capped a fine personal performance when he took the ball from his own half, sprinted down the line and fired in an inch-perfect cross for Millward to head home the fourth.
Ingram almost made it five but the game ended 4-0, providing a much-needed outing for Aztecs, whose next game is three weeks away, against Ashby.
