A PHARMACIST from Ashbourne is hoping to become a familiar face at food fairs and farmers’ markets with her range of home-made pickled onions and chutneys.

Julie Small, from Mugginton, spends her spare time making jars of pickled onions and chutneys and has recently started selling them on stalls - including at Ashbourne’s monthly farmers’ market.

The 54-year-old mother-of-two says she enjoys making the products and hopes it will become a nice little business for her.

She said: “It all started with me just playing around with it really. I’ve always loved pickled onions and when I couldn’t find any I liked I decided to start making them.

“I liked them and it turned out my friends liked them too so they kept asking for them so I thought why not try and make it into my own little business.

“I think it’s just going to evolve as I go along now, and I hope to just go with it. It’s very much a cottage industry.”

Julie’s chutneys and her pickled onions can be sampled at Ashbourne’s next farmers’ market on the Market Place on Thursday, January 30.
