MEET the newest Ashbourne Bobby on the beat - a cardboard cut-out of a uniformed policeman.
Ashbourne Police are pinning up an image of an officer in four town stores in the latest bid to cut shoplifting.
The life-sized police images have been delivered to Sainsburys, the Co-operative Store, Halfords and the 99p store as part of an initiative to increase awareness around the potential impact of theft.
Sergeant Denis Murphy, from the Ashbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “As a Safer Neighbourhood Team we have been looking at all kinds of ways of preventing acquisitive crime and we have been exploring some of the well-established tactics as well as looking at some of the more innovative approaches.
“The idea may seem rather amusing but there is a serious point behind the installation of these figures. It’s all about reminding people of their consciences and their responsibility to act according to the law.
“If just one person who is tempted to steal sees one of these, weighs up the risks and then decides not to, then I regard that as a success.”
